We made our way down to the ExCeL to visit Xerocon – the highlight of the accounting calendar. It was a valuable opportunity, allowing to us to update our knowledge and demonstrate our expertise.
Xerocon took place over three days in the heart of London’s financial district – the perfect location for an insightful, forward-thinking event.
Our Xerocon journey began with a visit to The Crystal Building, one of the world’s most sustainable buildings, to attend Fathom’s Advisable seminar. The Advisable programme was set up by software provider Fathom and is essentially a network of people who understand what real business advice is, who are working together to set up knowledge base for other accountants to use to better advise clients. We’ve been a huge part of the preparations and set-up of the Advisable programme, so we were proud to have a presence at the event.
At the event, we learned that 44% of accounting businesses find that tech is not the limiting factor across non-top 100 firms. Confidence in advisory is key, and Fathom highlighted a need for precedence, competence, strategy and the right attitude – if you show you have all those factors, you’re more likely to attract the right type of clients. This is exactly how we aim to work so it was excellent to see this highlighted and validating our way of working.
There were lots of useful talks and inspiring conversation at the event, and Joe was asked to speak on a short video to discuss how he found it and explain more about Nephos’ approach to business advisory. It became a bit of a theme throughout the week – Joe just couldn’t keep the paparazzi away! It was also great to catch up with friendly faces and make important new contacts as well.
This was the main day for Xerocon, and we were excited by the prospect of meeting and greeting so many outstanding app providers at the ExCeL. We were delighted to see our partners in Pleo and Fluidly and meet up with plenty of other app providers, and we’re privileged to have such fantastic support from them.
We then split up to attend different events about the future of Xero, including product updates and information of what’s to come in the future. Key new features that arose from the talks were the introduction of Xero Tax, short-term cashflow information, new business insights and CIS verification. We also enjoyed interesting panel talks from the likes of Jeri Williams (Smooth Accounting) and Will Farnell (Farnell Clarke) around the focus of digitisation and app advisory. Joe was also handpicked to join an intimate panel with Practice Ignition that discussed the future of the app and the services they provide.
The day drew to a close with the Xero party – a fun-filled fairground complete with a Ferris wheel, helter skelter and bumper cars, plus food carts from all around the world, live music and free drinks. We even snagged a few other freebies – our Practice Ignition beanies and Starling Bank socks are going to keep us cosy this winter!
After an amazing night at the Xero party, a tired Nephos team loaded themselves up with caffeine and headed to the ExCeL for another exciting day of panels and talks. The first event of the day was a motivational talk from Brad Burton, where he stressed the importance of lighting the candle and buying the Lurpak…
Following that, we were all pumped up and ready to go, so we headed back to the exhibition hall to catch up with everyone we missed on Wednesday, while also taking in more talks, demos and chats on how we can best benefit our practice.
The highlight of the day was an emotional and inspiring talk from Craig Hudson, former New Zealand rugby player and current MD of Xero NZ, who talked about his journey and the paths his career has taken. This was followed by a wellbeing panel where we learned about the best ways to look after ourselves as well as our business. Joe was once again chosen to speak to Xero about new product releases and the future of cloud accounting.
A fantastically inspiring week then drew to a close with a talk from the one and only Major Tim Peake – it was very motivating to hear him speak about his endeavours, and the visuals accompanying his talk were incredible.
What our week taught us
Overall, our Xerocon experience was really inspiring. As well as being able to relay information to the rest of the team, we brought back plenty of updates and features to tell our clients about to help them make the most of their Xero platform.
It was also fantastic to see our brand out there – Pleo were handing out leaflets that featured interviews with us and Revolut shared their video of the Nephos team’s experience of working with the company on their stand.
We can’t wait until next year’s Xerocon and we look forward to putting everything we learned into practice – if you’d like further information on any of the new Xero features, get in touch with the team by booking a call.
